She was forced to fetch 20 pots of water daily… but nobody knew she was carrying a prince’s child.  Part 4 continuation)  That was what he had been taught his whole life.  Duty before love.  Tradition before feelings.  The kingdom before the heart.  The wedding was arranged quickly.  Princess Obia was beautiful and well-educated.  But Emeka felt nothing for her.  On their wedding night, as tradition demanded,  they were left alone in the royal chamber.  The next morning…  the servants found Princess Obia dead in the bed.  The kingdom fell into mourning and confusion.  How could a healthy princess die overnight?  The priests performed rituals.  Sacrifices were made to the gods.  But no one could explain what had happened.  After three months, the king insisted Emeka  must marry again.  This time to Princess Adawora from the  neighboring Ikala Kingdom.  Again, the wedding was grand.  Again, the kingdom celebrated.  Again… the same thing happened.  On the wedding night…  Princess Adawora died mysteriously in her sleep.  Now people began to whisper.  "The prince is cursed."  Fear spread through the palace like wildfire. The king, now recovered from his illness,  summoned Ezenwa, the kingdom’s most  powerful chief priest.  Ezenwa came to the palace and began deep divination.  For three days he consulted the ancestors.  For three days he spoke to the gods.  For three days the palace waited in fear.  On the third day…  he emerged from the sacred grove.  His face was serious.  His voice was heavy with revelation.  "The gods are angry," Ezenwa announced  before the king and his council.  "Prince Chukwuemeka has already been  spiritually joined to a woman chosen by  destiny."  A cold silence filled the room.  "By marrying other women, he has violated  sacred laws."  "What woman?" the king demanded.  "Who is she?"  Ezenwa closed his eyes briefly before  answering.  "She lives in the neighboring village of Amayi (Enugu)."  "She is an orphan girl."  "She has no family… no status… no protection."  "But she carries the prince’s child."  A loud gasp filled the council chamber.  "The true heir to this throne grows in her  womb," Ezenwa continued.  "Until the prince marries her… any other woman  he takes as wife will die."  The council erupted into shock and argument.  "Impossible!"  "An orphan?"  "A nobody cannot be queen!"
