Aunt Mara called me first.

“I owe you an apology.”

I sat at my kitchen island with the phone against my ear.

“For what?”

I didn’t know what to say.

She continued.

“Yes.”

“And we all sat there.”

Her voice broke slightly.

“I’m sorry.”

Two cousins quietly reached out after learning about the emails.

I stopped trying to explain that universities generally don’t outsource academic integrity decisions to someone’s parents.

Ethan called daily for a while.

I leaned against my desk.

“No.”

“I’ll repay you.”

“I’ll work for you for free.”

“I’ll sign anything.”

“Ethan.”

He stopped.

“What about the 412 interviews?”

Silence.

“Are you going to tell the school those never happened?”

“That part can be explained.”

Even at his lowest point, he was not asking how to tell the truth.

He was asking which lie I would carry for him.

Part of me wanted to give him instructions.

Admit everything.

Stop bargaining.

Apologize to the students who had competed honestly for that fellowship.

Start over somewhere else.

Work.

Repay what you owe.

Build something real.

But doing that would have turned accountability into another plan I designed for him.

If Ethan was ever going to change, the first step had to belong to him.

Mom took the phone.

“Hasn’t he paid enough?”

I closed my eyes.

“He lost Claire. He lost his apartment. He lost the internship. He lost three years of his career.”

“Those are consequences of what he did.”

“Family survives by protecting each other.”

“Protecting him from every consequence is how we got here.”

She went quiet.

Then she said, “You really can live with this?”

The question stayed with me.

Not because I thought she was right.

Because part of me still wanted her to understand.

I wanted my mother to say she had been wrong.

I wanted Dad to admit that knowing I might never see the project was proof he knew it wasn’t Ethan’s.
